This is a terrible tragedy. The count of the dead is going to rise more and more over the coming days and weeks. I spoke today with a co-worker whose cousin is a rescue worker in the Galveston area. His report was very grim; much more so than has been reported in the news. Although people were warned to get out, far too many simply didn't take the warnings seriously, though every time they have to evacuate, it's a large expense. After a situation like with Hurricane Gustav, where it turned out not to be as bad as predicted, and the cost of evacuating was worse than staying in that case, it's a very human response to say, "It won't be that bad. We're not going to leave this time." But when it's measured against your life, it seems so foolish in retrospect. Here's the latest info on power restoration in the Houston/Galveston area:
